Simple Copywriting Secrets To Improve Conversions, Communication and Customer Relationships

There are a few tried-and-true secrets to simplifying your messaging.

And this is important because simplified communication in the context of marketing equals higher conversions, more revenue, and strengthened customer relationships. So, in this blog, I’m going to share a few simple copywriting secrets that will dramatically improve your messaging.

Keep reading to learn more.

1. Write With Empathy

empathy

The old saying, “People don’t care about how much you know until they know how much you care,” should be repeated to every marketer, salesperson, and business owner.

Your audience needs to feel that you truly understand them and their pain points.

And that’s why showing empathy is one of the most powerful yet simple copywriting secrets you can learn to facilitate better customer relationships. The good news is that this is not hard to do. In fact, if you’re a human with real experiences and emotions, you’re already halfway there.

Here are a few practical ways to start writing with empathy:

  • Speak their language: The first piece to this puzzle is to use simple terminology that your audience can understand and relate to. This is where research comes in. When I work with a new client, my first mission before I write a single word of copy is to intimately understand their audience. Speaking their language creates a sense of familiarity, which engages and builds audience trust.

  • Understand their pain: Your copy will be hollow and distant if it doesn’t communicate an understanding of your audience’s struggles. This is one of those simple copywriting secrets that isn’t really a secret. You should share anecdotes, stories, and relatable examples to show that you understand their pain. This, like speaking their language, will foster a sense of trust and emotional connection.

  • Show them the way: You don’t want to just twist the knife by reiterating all the pains that your audience is struggling with. At some point, you have to show them the light at the end of the tunnel. You need to communicate that there is hope, which, just so happens, to be on the other side of your product or service.

Using empathy is simply a matter of seeing another person’s pain and communicating with them through that lens. It’s about making an emotional connection with the reader and hearing and understanding their struggles. That’s where the magic happens.

2. Focus On The Subtext

subtext

It’s easy to see copywriting as just words on a page or a Google Doc.

But the truth is that a lot is going on beneath the surface of a well-written piece of copy. You think you’re reading one thing, but something else within the text is (subtly and secretly) at work, influencing your thoughts and emotions. It’s smoke and mirrors.

Kyle Milligan said it best in his copywriting book, Take Their Money: “With copywriting, it’s not what you say; it’s what you communicate.

For example… I could tell you, “My event is very popular and everybody loves it!”

That’s one way. It gets the point across easily enough. However, the overt nature of the claim makes it feel forced, unnatural, and inauthentic. It’s even a bit douchey if you ask me.

So, instead, I’d rephrase it to read, “Seats are selling out fast! I can’t guarantee you’ll be able to get in if you wait too long!”

The second line communicates that my event is popular without me actually saying that it’s popular.

See the difference?

It’s much more persuasive and believable if I communicate that my event is popular than say my event is popular.

3. Keep It Simple

simple

Here is one of the most simple copywriting secrets that can have the biggest impact on conversions…

In fact, this single strategy will have your customers thanking you for saving them precious brain calories. It will make them understand your offer clearly and easily, so they know exactly what they’re getting and how it will benefit them! And trust me when I say that makes all the difference in the world when it comes to them opening up their wallets and giving you their credit card details.

And the strategy is to keep it simple.

I can’t stress this enough. Confusion is the biggest conversion killer. If your ad copy confuses your audience, they’ll bounce quicker than a basketball on game night. Simplicity wins—always.

Lose any big, confusing words. Keep your paragraphs broken up and well-structured. Ensure the layout—whether in an email, sales page, or anything in between—is clean and polished.

All of this serves to make your ads or promotions EASY for your audience to read.
